Newton is unique with its 13 village centers, including names like Chestnut Hill, Waban, and Oak Hill. These centers emerged from settlement patterns influenced by railroads and geography such as the Charles River. The river also spurred early industrialization, leading to the establishment of mills around the Newton Upper Falls and Newton Lower Falls.

 

By the early 20th century, local transportation helped Newton suburbanize, reducing agricultural activities. Today, the City of Newton Planning & Development department works to maintain Newton as a desirable place for families working in Boston.
