With over 300 hundred years of history, Hopkinton evolved from a small town supported by grist mills and sawmills to a vacation spot with attractive mineral springs. More recently, the town has become a hub of high tech activity in Massachusetts.

 

Hopkinton in the 1980's and 1990's was one of the fastest growing towns in the Metrowest area of Boston. After the completion of Interstate Route 495 in the 1970's, many "high technology" companies settled nearby causing tremendous growth in home-building. The population doubled from nearly 8,000 residents in 1986 to more than 15,000 in 2010. The population is now estimated to approach 20,000.

 

Across the country, the city is perhaps most familiar as the starting point of the annual Boston Marathon. Each year since 1924, when the Marathon Committee officially moved the starting point to Hopkinton, runners and spectators have flocked to the city for the run. The local government organizes and manages traffic and crowds each year.
